Why Predictable Sentences?

This activity focuses on sentence structure by students using finger spaces between words, using a capital letter in the beginning of the sentence and using punctuation at the end. These sentences include period, exclamation and a question mark. The words that go together to make a complete sentence all have the same picture on the card. This allows students to build fluency when reading.

How to use this?

  • Small Group Instruction – This is perfect to pull a small group for intervention time to review sight words and sentences!
  • Whole Group – Wanting to review sentences? Use this in morning meeting with a pocket chart and have students build the sentence. You could also give groups of kids the words and have them stand in a line (left to right) in correct sentence order.
  • Literacy Center – After the students correctly unscramble each sentence, they can write the complete sentence on the recording sheet provided. This provides evidence for the teacher showing what sentences the students unscramble in the center. There are recording sheets to differentiate for learners (tracing and writing sentence independently).

Directions for use:

Print the cards and Mats on cardstock for extra durability . I would recommend laminating the cards so you can use them again and again. It works well to keep them in a baggies.

***If you do not have a pocket chart, the sentences can still be used simply by placing the words on the floor or table.
